Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, where is the promise of his coming?
2 Pet 2:4-5
I had previously been under the assumption that this passage was speaking of those in the world that mock, or scoff at the teachings of the Word of God. Scientists that mock creation, sinners that mock integrity, rebels that scoff at the statutes of God etc… As I was praying this last week God began to show me His heart concerning this passage. Many of the scoffers and mockers are from His very own body.
Consider the Church today. There are many that scoff at the movement of the Holy Spirit, and mock those who walk according to the Spirit. The church creates its own rules and traditions and scoff at the Word that would move them in a different direction. The church mocks Gods promises to heal the sick, raise the dead, or save even the most degenerate of sinners.
We scoff at the idea that God is good in spite of whatever wrong sin, the devil, or others have brought on us. We scoff at the idea that God truly is omniscient (all knowing) and believe that scientists, philosophers, atheists, and most of all WE have everything figured out.
I don’t know if you ever encounter scoffers or mockers in your day-to-day life, or if you have places that even you scoff at the Word (check your heart), but I know that it exists in the church today… and it breaks God’s heart.
